- The patient should be instructed precisely on how to collect the 24-hr urine.
- Normal fluid intake (1,5 – 2 l)
- Empty bladder after getting up in the morning. Do not collect this urine but make a note of the time.
- All following urine is collected for the next 24 hours. This also includes all urine during bowel movement.
Description:
- When adding acetic acid (for cystine and others) put the acetic acid into the collection container after the first passing of urine. To avoid acid burns of the skin point out the high acid concentration (96%) to the patient.
- The urine needs to be stored cool and protected from light.
- The last urine is collected on the next morning at the same time as the time noted the previous day.
- The 24-hour collection urine is mixed thoroughly and the total amount written down.
- Only a part (approximately 20ml) of the 24 hour collection urine is then sent to the laboratory with the detail of the total amount.
