Description | Indication: Gastroenteritis
- On request of „pathogenic germs”, the diagnostics are done in consideration of the patients’ age, the condition of the sample material and anamnestic information.
- Cultural evaluation for salmonella, shigella, Yersinia, campylobacter is always performed.
- In addition to this, in children under the age of six and adults over the age of 65, evaluation for rota,- astro,- adeno- and norovirus is carried out.
- If stools are liquid, additional testing is carried out for verotoxin 1 & 2 (enterohemorrhagic e. coli, EHEC), cryptosporidia, rota,- astro,- adeno-, and norovirus and, in patients above the age of 65, also clostridium difficile.
- If stools are bloody, additional testing is carried out for verotoxin 1 & 2 (enterohemorrhagic e. coli, EHEC) and clostridium difficile, as well as, in children under the age of three, cryptosporidia.
- Should all requested tests come back negative, additional test for enterotoxin of clostridium perfringens is performed.
Description:
- On the suspicion of pseudomembranous colitis also: Clostridium difficile. If negative, additional testing for enterotoxin of clostridium perfringens is carried out.
- After visiting the tropics, subtropics or South Korea, testing for aeromonas, vibrions, and parasites (including cryptosporidia and, if required, cyclospora as well as giardia- and entamoeba histolytica/dispar-antigen evidence) is carried out.
- Evaluation for fungus and individual evaluation requests of certain pathogens have to be specifically requested.
- Transfer stool (without mixed in urine) into the sample tube with the enclosed sample spoon (at least the size of a cherry). The sample tube should only be filled by 1/3.
- Ideally, bloody and slimy parts of stool, should be chosen for testing.
- In case of liquid stools, collect 3-5ml in a stool sample tube.
- The collection of 3 stool samples over a period of three consecutive days is recommended.
- Don’t collect these samples but send each sample on the date produced.
- Please note: On suspicion of shigellosis the evaluation should be carried out using a rectal swab!
