(Puncture specimen of the joint, pleura, pericardium, ascites, Douglas etc.)
Indication: Arthritis, pleuritis, pericarditis and others
- On the request of “germs and resistance”, the following tests will be arranged: Microscopy, aerobic and anaerobic cultures, fungus cultures, evidence of inhibitors, identification of pathogens and antibiogram.
- Testing for mycobacteria, chlamydia, borrelia, and others has to be specifically requested.
Description:
Skin disinfection:
- Thorough and extensive double skin disinfection with PVP-iodine. Let work in for a minimum of 1 min each.
- Following this a further outward disinfection using a sterile alcohol swab, concentric from the center of the disinfected area, should be performed.
- Do not contaminate the puncture area again, if required disinfect the palpating finger.
Puncture:
- During the disinfection and puncture throw away gloves are to be worn, following hygienic hand disinfection.
- A part of the puncture specimen has to be injected into a preheated, aerobic as well as anaerobic blood culture bottle and stored at room temperature until transport to the laboratory. Do not put it in the fridge! At the same time, send a native puncture specimen in a sterile tube with screw top. Splitting of puncture specimen into a further tube (EDTA- tube for cell counting) will be necessary in case of joint puncture for synovial fluid analysis.
