The microbiological comments take into consideration the “quality standards in microbiological-infectiological diagnostics (MiQ)” of the German society for hygiene and microbiology (DGMH), publisher: H. Mauch, R. Lütticken und S. Gatermann et al, Gustav Fischer Verlag.
- On the request of “pathogenic germs”, testing for pathogens that are characteristic for the sample location is carried out.
- On suspicion of clinical relevance of the evident germs an antibiogram is prepared (resistance determination may be limited to 2 germs).
- Testing for mycobacteria, actinomycetes, yeasts, molds, legionella, pneumocystis carinii has to be specifically requested.
- Microbiological samples should be taken prior to antibiotic therapy, where possible.
- Send sufficient amount of sample material.
- Disinfect skin or mucosa prior to puncture to avoid contamination with the human microbiota
