Physical exertion test
Indication | Suspicion of growth hormone deficiency. The exertion test is used for screening. In case of pathological result, further tests are recommended. |
Principle | Release of growth hormone on physical exertion. |
Evaluation parameters | Growth hormone (STH) |
Material | 2 ml serum each, before and after exertion |
Procedure | Fasting patient.
|
Evaluation | Normal STH-release: In 70 % of healthy children a growth hormone concentration of >10 µg/l is found after intense exertion.
Growth hormone deficiency: Further tests (IGF-1, IGF-BP3, GH-RH-test) are recommended, if the growth hormone concentration after exertion is below 10 µg/l.
Constitutional development disorder: In approximately 30 % of cases, an insufficient increase in growth hormone is seen after exertion. |
