Function tests

Suspicion of growth hormone deficiency. The exertion test is used for screening. In case of pathological result, further tests are recommended.

Release of growth hormone on physical exertion.

Growth hormone (STH)

2 ml serum each, before and after exertion

Fasting patient.

1. Taking of blood prior to exertion test.
2. Intense physical exertion for 15 min, either climbing stairs or doing standardized ergometer training (2 Watts / kg body weight).
3. Taking of bloods directly after exertion and, if necessary, after a 10 min break.

Normal STH-release:

In 70 % of healthy children a growth hormone concentration of >10 µg/l is found after intense exertion.

Growth hormone deficiency:

Further tests (IGF-1, IGF-BP3, GH-RH-test) are recommended, if the growth hormone concentration after exertion is below 10 µg/l.

Constitutional development disorder:

In approximately 30 % of cases, an insufficient increase in growth hormone is seen after exertion.
