Dexamethasone overnight test
(High-dose, 8 mg)
Indication | Differential diagnosis of confirmed Cushing syndrome with regard to ectopic/adrenal versus hypophyseal genesis (Morbus Cushing). |
Evaluation parameters | Cortisol, if necessary ACTH |
Material | 2 ml serum or plasma (which has to be centrifuged at once and frozen) in the morning after dexamethasone administration. |
Procedure |
|
Evaluation | A decrease of the cortisol levels to < 5 µg/dl following dexamethasone administration points toward central Cushing syndrome (Morbus Cushing). In addition to this, a 50 % decrease of the initial cortisol value following dexamethasone administration rather points toward central Cushing than ectopic or adrenal Cushing. |
