STH suppression test with OGTT
Indication | Suspicion of growth hormone producing tumor |
Contraindication | Diabetic metabolism |
Principle | Oral administration of glucose leads to suppression of growth hormone concentration. |
Evaluation parameters | Growth hormone (STH), glucose. |
Material |
|
Procedure | In the morning, fasting patient.
|
Evaluation | Normal findings: Oral administration of glucose leads to suppression of the growth hormone concentration below a value of < 0,5 µg/l within 1 – 2 hours.
Growth hormone producing tumor (acromegaly): Little or no suppression with autonomous STH-production to GH levels of > 5 µg/l). In a few cases, where a growth hormone producing tumor is present, the growth hormone may paradoxically increase after stimulation even in comparison to the initial values. |
