Helicobacter pylori -C13- breath test
Indication |
|
Contraindication | Breath test should only be used in children over the age of 8, to receive useful results. |
Principle | Taking of urea with a C13- isotope of carbon. If H. pylori (which preferably breaks up urea) is present in the stomach and duodenal mucosa, C13-carbon dioxide is exhaled. This can be measured with an infrared spectrometer. Taking of C13-carbon is harmless, as it is a natural, non-radioactive isotope. |
Evaluation parameters | 12-carbon dioxide and 13-carbon dioxide in the exhaled air. |
Material | Air |
Procedure | The patient should have been fasting for a minimum of 4 hours. Discontinue proton pump inhibitors (PPI) a minimum of 1 week prior to breath test, and antibiotics 4 – 6 weeks prior to the breath test. Taking of antacids and antibiotics inhibits urease activity and can therefore lead to false negative results.
