Oral glucose tolerance test during pregnancy
Indication | In accordance with the pregnancy guidelines, every pregnant woman in the 6th to 7th month of pregnancy (24 + 0 until 27 + 6 weeks of pregnancy) is offered to be tested for gestational diabetes. |
Procedure | Pre-test in all pregnant women from the 24 + 0 until 27 + 6 weeks of pregnancy with 50 g OGTT:
In case of blood glucose values of ≥ 135 mg/dl – 199 mg/dl after 60 min, there is a suspicion of gestational diabetes, hence a 75 g OGTT should be added. In case of blood glucose values of ≥ 200 mg/dl, diagnosis is not gestational diabetes but rather “initial manifestation of diabetes mellitus in pregnancy” (without performing a 75 g OGTT). The diagnosis of gestational diabetes is already given, when only one value is exceeded. A diagnosis of “initial manifestation of diabetes mellitus in pregnancy” is made, when the following levels are met:
