Function tests

• Suspicion of impaired glucose intolerance with levels of fasting glucose 110 – 126 mg/dl.
• Suspicion of gestational diabetes

Diabetic metabolism

On suspicion of insulin resistance, evaluation of insulin levels may be sensible after 60 or 120 min. Insulin levels of > 100 mU/l after 60 min and > 75 mU/l after 120 min indicate insulin resistance even in case of inconspicuous blood sugar levels.

Glucose, if necessary insulin

2 ml sodium fluoride blood each, before (0 min value) and 60 min or 120 min after glucose administration.

If necessary also 2 ml serum each for insulin.

• Patient empty-stomached after fasting for 12 hours. The test should commence between 8 and 9 o’clock
• Smoking is prohibited before and during the test
• Taking of blood prior to glucose administration
• Oral intake of 75 g glucose solution. Children get 1,75 g / kg body weight, but no more than 75 g. No additional fluids are to be taken.
• Taking of blood 60 and 120 min after glucose administration. (The 60-min value is not mandatory).

Diabetes mellitus exists, if the

• Fasting blood glucose value (0 min value) is ≥ 126 mg/dl
• Blood glucose after 120 min is ≥ 200 mg/dl

There is impaired glucose tolerance (pre diabetes), if the:

• Fasting blood glucose value (0 min value) is between 111 – 125 mg/dl
• Blood glucose after 120 min is between 141 – 199 mg/dl

There is insulin resistance, if the:

• Insulin after 60 min is > 100 mU/l
• Insulin after 120 min is > 75 mU/l
