HCG stimulation test
Indication |
|
Contraindication | Hypersensitivity to HCG (rare) |
Principle | HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) predominantly possesses the biological activity of LH and stimulates testosterone production of the Leydig cells. |
Evaluation parameters | Testosterone, if necessary androstenedione and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) |
Material | 2 ml serum before (0 min value) and 72 hours after HCG injection. |
Procedure |
|
Evaluation | Prepubertal boys: Normal Leydig cell function: Testosterone after stimulation > 1 µg/l An increased testosterone/DHT quotient after HCG stimulation may indicate 5-alpha reductase deficiency (infants 5,2 ± 1,5, adolescent boys 11 ± 4,4).
Normal Leydig cell function: Testosterone after stimulation > 9 µg/l An increased testosterone/DHT quotient after HCG stimulation of > 30 is found in adults with 5-alpha reductase deficiency. A massively elevated androstenedione/testosterone quotient may be caused by a deficiency of 17-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. |
