GH-RH test
(Growth hormone-releasing hormone)
Indication | Suspicion of growth hormone deficiency |
Principle | Intravenous administration of GHRH leads to growth hormone (STH) from the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. |
Evaluation parameters | Growth hormone (STH) |
Material | 2 ml serum before and 30, 60 and 90 min after GH-RH administration. |
Procedure | Insert indwelling venous line in fasting patient.
Side effects: Flush-symptoms |
Evaluation | An increase of STH values to > 7,5 µg/l (in the assay used by our laboratory) makes growth hormone deficiency in both children and adults unlikely. In adults, a second confirmation test such as Arginine STH stimulation test, which can also be carried out concurrently with the GH-RH test, or an additional glucagon stimulation test is recommended. In children, the glucagon stimulation test can replace the arginine STH stimulation test. A GH-RH test is not recommended in children, as the cause of the frequent idiopathic growth hormone deficiency is often hypothalamic, which leads to false negative results in the GH-RH test. For definite exclusion of growth hormone deficiency in adults, the insulin tolerance test (ITT) is suitable. |
