Gastrin stimulation test
(Secretin provocation test)
Indication | Suspicion of gastrinoma (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). For monitoring of therapy with certain medication (such as proton pump inhibitors, H2-blockers, somatostatin analogue: Octreotide) of the Zollinger-Ellison-syndrome as well as after surgical resection. |
Evaluation parameters | Gastrin |
Material | 2 ml serum before and 2, 5, 15 and 30 min after secretin administration |
Procedure | Patient preparation: Discontinue antacids, anticholinergics and H2- receptor antagonists 24 hours prior to blood collection. Discontinue proton pump inhibitors (benzimidazole, omeprazole, Antra®) 5 – 7 days prior to blood collection. Insert indwelling venous catheter in fasting patient.
|
Evaluation | There is no significant gastrin increase after stimulation in case of normal gastrin values or functional hypergastrinemia. In approximately 10% of patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, the gastrin stimulation test is negative (no significant gastrin increase). 30% of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome occur in the context of a MEN-1 syndrome. |
