Bacteriology
Microscopic detection and culture of bacteria.
Req. specimen:
5-10 ml cerebrospinal fluid. Please send specimen to the laboratory without delay. Until transport the cerebrospinal fluid can be kept at room temperature, or better at 37°C (do not store in the refrigerator at 4°C). It is recommended to inject part of the fluid into a aerobic blood culture bottle. In addition blood cultures should be collected from a peripheral vein.
Serology
eg. borrelia, herpes simplex, varicella zoster, syphilis, measles, mumps, CMV, EBV, HIV a.o.
Req. specimen:
2 ml cerebrospinal fluid und 2 ml serum.
DNA/RNA test
eg. herpes simplex 1 und 2, varicella zoster, CMV, HIV, mycobacterium tuberculosis, borrelia, treponema
Req. specimen:
1 ml cerebrospinal fluid in a separate collection tube
Cytology
Req. specimen:
1 ml fresh cerebrospinal fluid in 1 ml of 10% formalin
Cell count, erythrocytes
Req. specimen:
Both specimen are required. The cerebrospinal fluid (1 ml) should be at the laboratory for examination not later than 2 hours after withdrawal.
cerebrospinal fluid status
Req. specimen:
3 ml serum and 2 ml cerebrospinal fluid. The simultaneous examination of both specimen is necessary for adequate interpretation of the findings. |
