Mumps
(Paramyxovirus, serotype 1)
Material: | Antibody detection: 2 ml serum, 2 ml CSF (in case of involvement of the central nervous system) PCR: 2 – 3 ml EDTA-blood, 0,5 ml CSF (external service) | Criteria for evaluation | Serum: IgG: < 16 – 22 RE/ml IgM: < 0,9 – 1,1 index PCR: negative |
Indication | Parotitis epidemica | Mandatory reporting | ja Direct and indirect virus demonstration will be reported to the responsible health department by the laboratory, stating the patient’s name. Suspicion, illness and death have to be reported by the treating physician. |
Please note | IgM antibody increase 2 – 3 days, IgG antibody increase 3 – 6 days after clinical manifestation. Cross reactions with parainfluenza viruses. Incubation period of 16 – 21 days. Viremia and especially parotitis, often also mumps meningitis (prognostically favorable). Complications: Pancreatitis, orchitis (in/after puberty), oophoritis in women. Immune protection in IgG titers > 22 RE/ml. |
