Mucormycosis
Material: | Depending on localization either biopsy material, swabs, bronchial secretion, bronchial lavage, CSF, blood cultures (pathogen detection) |
Methods: | Kulturelle Untersuchungen → aerober Atmosphäre |
Indication | Suspicion of mucormycosis |
Please note | Mucormycosis is a very rare opportunistic fungal infection, which usually only occur in immunosuppressed patients as a secondary disease. Predisposed are patients with diabetes, leukemia and/or under chemotherapy. The fungal species responsible for mucormycosis are mucor, rhizopus, rhizomucor and absidia amongst others. The characteristic and largely uniform clinical picture of the rhino cerebral form is marked by pain in the sinuses and bloody nasal secretion, followed by disorders of eye movement with diplopia, fever and reduced consciousness. Without treatment, a lethal outcome within a few days to weeks is possible. In case of lung infestation, there will be a severe pneumonia with high fever, breathing difficulties and hemoptysis. |
