HTLV-I/II
(Human T-lymphotropic viruses, human T-cell leukemia viruses)
Material: | 1 ml serum, 1 ml plasma |
Methods: | Ligandenassays → Chemilumineszenz-Immunoassay (CLIA) | Reference range | negative |
Indication | Etiologically, HTLV-I was connected to neoplastic illnesses as well as a number of demyelinating neurological diseases: T-cell leukemia of the adult type (ATL), tropic spastic partial paralysis (TSP) and/or HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (HAM) as well as HTLV-I-associated polymyositis, arthritis and infectious dermatitis. There are suggestions, that a HAM/TSP-like neurodegenerative disease and a lymphoproliferative illness may be associated with HTLV-II. HTLV-I and HTLV-II are common worldwide in populations with high infection risk, such as intravenous drug consumers, prostitutes and patients in special clinics for venereal diseases. Transmission is by intimate contact, contact with infected cellular blood components (transfusion, iv. drug consumption) or perinatally via breast milk. |
Please note | HTL-viruses belong to the group of retroviruses. A reactive HTLV-screening result has to be verified by a second, independent test method (immunoblot). |
