Glutathione
Material: | 1 ml EDTA blood, frozen |
Methods: | Spektrometrie → UV- / VIS-Photometrie | Reference range | 200 mg/l – 400 mg/l |
Indication | Assessment of the endogenic antioxidative protection, chemotherapy progress checks, monitoring of HIV-patients |
Please note | Glutathione is present in all live cells in relatively high concentration and is the most important endogenic antioxidant. In the complicated defense system against free radicals, glutathione plays an important role in the prevention of oxidative damage in cells and tissue. The formation of free oxygen radicals in the organism is an inevitable concomitant of the oxidant energy supply. Free radicals are deemed partially responsible for diseases such as coronary heart disease and tumors as well as for the ageing process. Vitamins C and E belong to the most important antioxidants taken up with food. Furthermore, selenium and zinc play key roles in the neutralization of free radicals. During chemotherapy, an increase of glutathione in the blood can indicate resistance and therapy failure. |
