Bile acids in the serum
Material: | 1 ml serum |
Methods: | Spektrometrie → UV- / VIS-Photometrie | Reference range | Normal: Empty-stomached: < 10 µmol/l 2 hours after meal: < 20 µmol/l
Biliary obstruction: Empty-stomached: > 180 µmol/l 2 hours after meal: > 180 µmol/l Significantly increased, no difference between fasting levels and postprandial levels
Intrahepatic cholestasis: Empty-stomached: approx. 100 µmol/l 2 hours after meal: approx. 120 µmol/l Lower than in extrahepatic causes
Portosystemic shunt: Empty-stomached: < 10 µmol/l 2 hours after meal: > 180 µmol/l
Impaired intestinal motility or gall bladder contraction: Empty-stomached: 25 µmol/l – 50 µmol/l 2 hours after meal: < 20 µmol/l Fasting levels are higher than postprandial levels
Intestinal malabsorption: Empty-stomached: approx. 10 µmol/l 2 hours after meal: approx. 10 µmol/l |
Indication | Hepatobiliary dysfunction, pruritus during pregnancy, decreased circulation of the enterohepatic system |
Please note | Evaluation should preferably be carried out postprandially |
