Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae
(Erysipeloid, fish poisoning)
Material: | Pathogen-detection: Deep skin biopsy from the wound margins, wound secretion. Blood cultures in case of suspicion of endocarditis. |
Methods: | Kulturelle Untersuchungen → aerober Atmosphäre |
Indication | Suspicion of erysipeloid; very rarely endocarditis |
Please note | Widespread zoonosis (worldwide), the pathogen belongs to the normal flora of many animal species (such as fish, poultry). After accidental transmission of pathogen through damaged skin (especially butchers, vets, farmers) humans develop a painful local infection with non-purulent reddening of skin, very rare these days. Mostly the disease is self-limiting after 14 – 21 days. |
