Cystatin C
Material: | 1 ml serum (Stability in serum at 4° – 8°C: 7 days) |
Methods: | Spektrometrie → Nephelometrie | Reference range | 0,6 – 1,1 mg/l |
Indication | Evaluation of the glomerular filtration rate, especially in patients with very little or lots of muscle mass or in case of creatine powder consumption. |
Please note | Cystatin C is a protein with low molecular weight (13 kDa), which is produced in constant rates by all nucleus-containing cells and which is glomerular filtrated. Cystatin C serum concentration shows better correlation to the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) as opposed to creatinine evaluation. It reflects the GFR independent of age or gender. Merely in newborns and infants up to 12 months of age, levels are higher. Cystatin C concentration is independent from muscle mass and is not- unlike creatinine- influenced by tubular secretion. Other known factors, which may lead to increased cystatin C levels are corticosteroids, hyperthyroidism (in case of hypothyroidism there are slightly decreased levels), metastasized colorectal carcinoma or melanoma. |
