Material: | Cherry-sized stool sample or a minimum of 1 ml liquid stools
Pathogen detection: Rectal swab, vomit, blood culture. Quick transport to the laboratory required as vibrions die fast. |

Indication | Diarrhea and matching travel anamnesis (Tropics, subtropics, India) | Mandatory reporting | ja Pathogenic proof of vibrio cholerae O1 and O139 will be reported to the responsible health authorities by the laboratory, stating the patients’ name. Furthermore, there is reporting obligation in accordance with §6 IfSG in case of suspicion of disease, disease and death by disease. |
Please note | Cholera is caused by the bacterium vibrio cholerae (preferably serotype O1 and O139). In Germany, there are individual cases in return travelers every year. Fecal-oral pathogen transmission via contaminated water, drinking water or food. Extreme watery diarrhea is typical (rice-water stool). In case of clinical suspicion, please phone the laboratory straight away! Other vibrions can also cause diarrhea. Further information can be found here: www.rki.de |
