Chlamydia infections
(Chlamydophila pneumoniae)
Material: | Antibody demonstration: 1 ml serum PCR: Bronchial lavage, tracheal secretion, sputum, nasopharyngeal aspirate | Reference range | IgG: < 16 – 22 relative units/ml IgA: < 0,8 – 1,0 index IgM: < 0,8 – 1,0 index PCR: negative |
Indication | Pneumonia, bronchitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis |
Please note | The spectrum of clinical symptoms caused by Chlamydophila pneumoniae includes pharyngitis, sinusitis, bronchitis and atypical pneumonias (approximately 10 % of all pneumonias). The frequency of the mainly mild courses of illness increases during childhood and reaches its peak in young adults. Endemic infection in adults is 25 – 45 %. Human-to-human transmission through aerosols and smear infection. Epidemic increase approximately every 6 – 7 years with a duration of 2 – 3 years. Outbreak often localized. Species-specific antibodies against Chlamydophila pneumoniae only increase slowly after infection; it may take up to 3 weeks until IgA antibodies are detectable and up to 6 weeks for IgG antibodies to be seen. |
