Carnitine ratio: Acyl carnitine / free carnitine
Material: | 1 ml serum / plasma |
Methods: | Flüssigkeitschromatographie-Massenspektrometrie (LC-MS/MS) → LC-Tandem-Massenspektrometrie | Reference range | Men: 24,6 – 51,0 µmol/l Women: 17,9 – 45,5 µmol/l Children: please refer to findings report |
Indication | Suspicion of metabolic disorders (symptoms such as muscular weakness, cardiomyopathy, encephalopathy, hepatopathy etc.). Organic acidurias, disturbances of the degradation of fatty acids (ß-oxidation cycle), disturbances of transport of the fatty acid (carnitine-cycle). Besides these primary metabolic disorders, there are decreased free carnitine levels in the following situations: Long-term carnitine-free diet, valproic acid medication, hemodialysis, from the 12th week of pregnancy. |
