Calcium in serum
(Ca)
Material: | 1 ml serum or plasma Blood extraction in empty-stomached patient without the use of a tourniquet |
Methods: | Spektrometrie → UV- / VIS-Photometrie | Reference range | Adults: 2,15 - 2,55 mmol/l (8,6 - 10,2 mg/dl) Children: please refer to findings report |
Indication | Increased: Neoplasias or bone metastases, multiple myeloma, hyperparathyroidism, nephrolithiasis, sarcoidosis, Paget’s disease. Decreased: Tetanic syndrome, muscular weakness, hypoparathyroidism, osteoporosis, kidney insufficiency, vitamin D deficiency, Cushing syndrome. |
Please note | Serum calcium should always be determined together with albumin or total protein to ensure that hypocalcemia is not caused by hypoproteinemia for instance. Numerous medications lead to hypo- and hypercalcemia. Please also refer to sections “Bone metabolism”, “hypocalcemia” and “hypercalcemia” (indications directory). |
