| Indication | Increased: Neoplasias or bone metastases, multiple myeloma, hyperparathyroidism, nephrolithiasis, sarcoidosis, Paget’s disease. Decreased: Tetanic syndrome, muscular weakness, hypoparathyroidism, osteoporosis, kidney insufficiency, vitamin D deficiency, Cushing syndrome. |
| Please note | Serum calcium should always be determined together with albumin or total protein to ensure that hypocalcemia is not caused by hypoproteinemia for instance. Numerous medications lead to hypo- and hypercalcemia. Please also refer to sections “Bone metabolism”, “hypocalcemia” and “hypercalcemia” (indications directory). |
