Blood in stool, immunological
(iFOBT)
Material: | The patient collects the stool with a stool sample set, directly into a buffer-filled stool collection tube. The stool sample set includes collection tube, bag, absorbent pad, stool catcher and instructions and can be ordered from our laboratory free of charge. The stool collection tube must be returned to the laboratory within 5 days from obtaining the stool sample. Please state collection date. Sample transport at room temperature. |
Methods: | Spektrometrie → Immunturbidimetrie | Reference range | Evaluation criteria: < 100 ng/ml |
Indication | Cancer screening program for colon carcinoma, -adenoma and polyps. |
Please note | iFOBT is short for immunological fecal occult blood test. (As part of the yearly bowel cancer screening from age 50, all patients can have their stool tested for occult blood on the German statutory health insurance. For insured persons from age 55 onwards, the German statutory health insurance covers the iFOBT test as an alternative for colonoscopy, every two years. Of course, this test can also be done as a so-called “IGeL” request (individual health service)). The iFOBT is more standardized and gives quantitative results, compared to Guaiac-testing. Sensitivity and specificity of the new test is much better. There are no falsified test results due to food components such as animal blood, vitamin C or medication. There is no need to advise the patient of any special dietary recommendations. Disadvantageous is a potential bacterial hemoglobin decomposition, with the danger of false-negative results. Therefore, the stool sample should be examined within a short time frame. It should be noted, that colorectal lesions only bleed intermittently and in addition to carcinomas and polys, diverticula and hemorrhoids could be a source of bleeding. |
