Amylase in the serum
Material: | 1 ml serum (stability in serum at 4°C - 8°C: 7 days) |
Methods: | Spektrometrie → UV- / VIS-Photometrie | Reference range | < 110 U/l |
Indication | Acute pancreatitis, exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis, acute abdomen with pancreas-involvement, pancreatic carcinoma, Parotitis, kidney failure with tubulopathy, macroamylasemia (see macro enzymes) |
Please note | Thiazides, sulfonamides and opiates (by spasm of the sphincter oddi) can lead to increased amylase levels. In acute pancreatitis, especially in the acute exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis, serum analysis can be false negative in up to 30 % of all cases! Amylase half-life is 3 – 6 hours. Lipase and pancreas amylase in the serum are more sensitive and more specific than amylase. In case of non-plausible persisting amylase increase, consider macro-amylase. More pancreatitis markers: Lipase, pancreas elastase. |
