Ascaris lumbricoides
(Roundworm)
Material: | Egg-test: Stool from 3 different days, each 2 – 3 days apart, walnut sized samples (pathogen detection). Pathogen detection is the method of choice.
Antibody demonstration: 1 ml serum, external service Serologic methods are only used in support of diagnosis; they are not the method of choice.
The EIA is not species-specific. Cross-reactions with other nematodes and echinococcus are possible. |
Methods: |
Ligandenassays → Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) Mikroskopie → Hellfeldmikroskopie | Criteria for evaluation | Antibody detection in serum IgG: negative |
Indication | Suspicion of infection with roundworm with corresponding anamnesis and symptoms of nausea, vomiting, abdominal problems; in case of heavy infestation: Vomiting, not related to food, partly allergic reactions to metabolites, volatile eosinophilic infiltrate during larvae’s pulmonary passage, extreme eosinophilia. |
Please note | Incidence: Worldwide, especially in warm countries. Infection mode: Oral ingestion of larvae-containing eggs via contaminated food (fruit, vegetable). After travelling through the portal vein system via the heart-lung passage, the eggs reach the trachea and throat and are swallowed again. After around 8 weeks, adult round worms produce eggs, which are excreted through the stool. A direct human-to-human transmission is not possible. |
