| Please note | Apolipoprotein E is part of the VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins) and chylomicrons. The familial type III hyperlipoproteinemia is nearly always associated with the Apo-E2-allele of the homozygote form. In the normal population, this allele has an incidence of 8 %. The Apo-E4-allele of the homozygote form is associated with a lifetime risk of over 50 % in regards to developing dementia. Apo-E2 on the other hand seems to reduce this risk. |
