Anti-mitochondrial antibodies
(AMA and AMA subtype 2)
Material: | 1 ml serum |
Methods: | Ligandenassays → Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) | Reference range | < 20 RE/ml |
Indication | Suspicion of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), chronic cholestatic liver disease |
Please note | Anti-mitochondrial antibodies are found in rheumatic and chronic liver diseases. Detection of subtype M2 can support the diagnosis of primary biliary cirrhosis. Target antigen is mitochondrial pyruvate dehydrogenase. Prevalence of M2 antibodies in PBC is 90 – 95 %, in addition to this, they are also found in 10 % of autoimmune hepatitis cases. Antibodies remain unchanged during treatment; therefore, they are not suitable for activity evaluation. |
