Anaerobic infections
Material: | On suspicion of anaerobes, the material must always be sent using a transport medium. This transport medium with swab and anaerobic blood culture bottles can be requested using the shipping material order form. Contamination with normal aerobic flora must be avoided. Accordingly, skin- or mucosal disinfection has to be carried out thoroughly. Please also refer to section “material collection- puncture specimen”. It is important that samples are not exposed to air. Due to the anaerobes’ sensitivity to cold, they should also not be kept in the fridge. Suitable specimen for anaerobic cultures: Blood, ascites, bile, synovial and pericardial fluid, CSF, thoracentesis fluid, transudate, aspirated pus from deep wounds or abscesses. Material from: Placental tissue, Bartholin’s glands, puncture of the Douglas´ pouch, endometrium, Fallopian tube, septic abortion, prostatic fluid, semen, appendix etc. , postoperative peritonitis, trans-tracheal aspirate, direct lung puncture, stool (only if clinically indicated), suprapubic bladder aspiration. |
