Albumin in the serum
Material: | 1 ml serum |
Methods: | Spektrometrie → Nephelometrie | Reference range | Adults: 35 g/l – 52 g/l Children: Please refer to findings report |
Indication | Edema, kidney diseases, dehydration, tumors, liver cirrhosis, burns, in connection to CSF diagnostics |
Please note | Albumin is the quantitatively most important plasma protein, with a share of 60 %. The 66 kDa heavy protein, which is synthetized in the liver, is responsible for the transportation of hydrophobic substances such as hormones, pharmaceutics or unconjugated bilirubin. The half-life in circulation is 21 days. This means approximately 14 g albumin are newly synthesized each day. Decreased albumin levels in the serum are indicative of severe protein loss (renal or enteral), liver failure or malnutrition. As a negative acute phase protein, slight concentration reduction is also seen in longer-term inflammatory conditions. |
