Lithium
Material: | 1 ml serum |
Indication | Therapeutic drug monitoring |
Therapeutic range | 0,4 mmol/l – 1,2 mmol/l |
Please note | Lithium is used for the treatment of bipolar disorder (mania) and endogenic depression. The effect mechanism remains unclear. For prophylactic lithium therapy, a serum level between 0,5 and 0,8 mmol/l should be aimed for. The elimination half-life is 24 hours. Excretion is renal and is intensified by high sodium and water uptake. Even with normal kidney function, significant fluctuations of the serum lithium concentration are seen under the standard maintenance dose. Toxic side effects such as muscle twitching, ataxia and sleepiness in concentrations > 1,5 mmol/l, seizures, dehydration and comatose state in values > 2,8 mmol/l, concentrations > 4,0 mmol/l are potentially lethal. |
