Neonatal screening
Material: | 6 - 9 drops of blood on special filter card, available from our laboratory. Blood is collected by heel prick , taken on the third day of life; but not later than 7 days after birth. After drying the sample in ambient air (do not use additional heat) the specimen is suitable to be sent to the laboratory. Alternatively 1 ml EDTA blood obtained by venous puncture. If the blood is taken within 48 h after birth a second screening is necessary and if blood is collected between 48 and 72 h a second screening is recommended. If one has missed the neonatal screening during the first few days, it should be performed as soon as possible. |
Description | Testing for phenylketonuria, hypothyroidism and classic galactosemia (so called Guthrie test). The following tests are recommended for all newborns but are not performed routinely: biotinidase deficiency and adrenal hyperplasia. |
