NSE
(Neuron specific enolase)
Material: | 1 ml serum, hemolysis-free 1 ml heparin plasma (most suitable material to avoid hemolysis). A timely delay of more than 60 minutes until the blood is centrifuged leads to an NSE increase, as this is released from the thrombocytes (Stability in hemolysis-free serum at 4°C – 8°C: 3 days) 1 ml CSF |
Methods: | Ligandenassays → Chemilumineszenz-Immunoassay (CLIA) | Reference range | Serum: < 16,3 ng/ml CSF: < 15,3 µg/l |
Indication | Therapy control and progress checks of small-cell bronchial carcinoma, neuroblastoma and apudomas. NSE is the tumor marker of choice for small-cell bronchial carcinoma; in 80% of cases, values > 25 ng/ml are seen. The combined evaluation with chromogranin A or ProGRP leads to an additionally increased sensitivity. CSF diagnostics of neurodestructive processes such as apoplexy. |
Please note | As NSE is also present in erythrocytes and thrombocytes, hemolytic serum leads to false-high levels. NSE is also increased in case of benign pulmonary illnesses and CNS diseases. In addition, other carcinoma of the gastrointestinal tract, adnexa, CNS and hemolytic system can lead to slightly increased NSE levels; in case of hepatocellular carcinoma, very high concentrations may be seen. |
