Nocardia
(Nocardia asteroides complex, Nocardia farcinica)
Material: | Pathogen detection: Sputum, BAL, CSF, urine, tissue, puncture specimens of abscesses, blood cultures. Generally, bronchoscopically obtained samples are better suitable for the detection of Nocardia than sputum, as the accompanying flora is sparse. Testing for Nocardia must be specifically requested, as a longer incubation period is required. |
Methods: |
Mikroskopie → Hellfeldmikroskopie Kulturelle Untersuchungen → CO2 Atmosphäre |
Indication | Suspicion of nocardiosis |
Please note | Nocardia are ubiquitous. Infection is by aerosols or traumatic inoculation. Nocardiosis is seen primarily in immunosuppressed patients and is always acquired exogenously. The nocardiosis can be divided into three forms: pulmonary, systemic and disseminated. Very rarely an inoculation of Nocardia through minor skin injuries, followed by skin infection and subcutaneous fatty tissue infection, sometimes necrosis, can be seen in immunocompetent persons. |
