Niacin
(Nicotinamide, vitamin B3)
Material: | 2 ml serum |
Methods: | Flüssigkeitschromatographie-Massenspektrometrie (LC-MS/MS) → LC-Tandem-Massenspektrometrie | Reference range | 8 µg/l – 52 µg/l |
Indication | Neurological disorders, general weakness, loss of appetite, vertigo, memory problems, confusion, visual defects. Dermatitis, bilateral of areas exposed to light. Pellagra, marked by the “DDD”: dermatitis with hyperkeratosis and hyperpigmentation, dementia and diarrhea (This used to be endemic in many parts of the world, nowadays it’s rare). The determination of niacin is also indicated in case of malnutrition, malabsorption or medication-induced interaction (i.e. aminoglycoside antibiotics, diazepam, isoniazid, phenytoin etc.). Niacin deficiency may also be caused by autosomal recessive hereditary Hartnup disease (decrease of trp-resorption with reduced hepatic niacin biosynthesis, prevalence 1:100.000) |
