Macroprolactin
Material: | 1 ml serum |
Methods: | Agglutinationsteste → Präzipitation | Reference range | Please refer to findings report (depending on age and gender) | Criteria for evaluation | Prolactin recovery after PEG precipitation > 60 %: predominantly monomeric prolactin |
Indication | Differential diagnosis of hyperprolactinemia |
Please note | Macroprolactin is a complex from prolactin and IgG antibodies, which has only slight to no biological activity. The presence of macroprolactin can simulate hyperprolactinemia. Irrespective of the severity of the hyperprolactinemia, in 10 – 36 % of cases macroprolactin development has to be expected. This is to be assumed particularly if typical symptoms of hyperprolactinemia such as galactorrhea, oligorrhea or amenorrhea of the woman or testosterone deficiency of the man are missing. |
