Lactoferrin
(also known as lactotransferrin)
Material: | Cherry-sized stool sample or a minimum of 1 ml liquid stools |
Methods: | Ligandenassays → Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) | Reference range | Normal: < 7,2 µg/ml Positive: ≥ 7,2 µg/ml 1 g of stool equals 1 ml |
Indication | Demonstration of inflammatory processes in the intestines, progress checks of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, prediction of flare-ups of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, evaluation of therapy success in chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. |
Please note | Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein, which is produced and stored in the secondary granules of neutrophils. In addition, it is also present in several liquid secretions such as milk, saliva, tears and nasal secretion. In case of intestinal inflammation, mature neutrophils migrate to the intestinal mucosa and release lactoferrin by degranulation. Fecal lactoferrin therefore is a marker of neutrophilic intestinal inflammation. |
