| Please note | Antacids, H2-inhibitors, anticholinergics have to be discontinued 24 hours prior to blood extraction. Proton pump inhibitors have to be discontinued at least 14 days prior to blood taking. Gastrin levels of up to 1000 pg/ml and a gastral pH-value below 2 justify diagnosis of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome with gastrinoma. If the gastrin levels significantly exceed 1000 pg/ml, a gastrinoma in the duodenal area must be considered. Levels around 1000 pg/ml are rather indicative of a gastrinoma in the pancreas region (usually at the head of pancreas). Gastrin levels below 1000 pg/ml however, do not rule out gastrinoma. Measurement of the pH-value in the stomach can also rule out secondary hypergastrinemias, which can be caused by medication (such as PPI) or illnesses (such as autoimmune gastritis). The gastric pH-level in these cases is > 2. |
