Fat, total in stool
Material: | Approximately 10 g stool, please state total 24-hour stool quantity | Reference range | < 4,5 g/100 g |
Indication | Demonstration of steatorrhea, pancreas insufficiency, gluten sensitive enteropathy, amyloidosis |
Comment | Method: Titrimetry after saponification of fat |
Please note | The evaluation of fat in stool is mainly obsolete, as better indictors for the assessment of the exocrine pancreas function are available, i.e. fecal elastase. Minor sensitivity in case of chronic pancreatitis; in chronic pancreatitis the increased total fat excretion in stool only shows in the late phase, when over 90 % of the exocrine secretory function is gone. Source of error: Insufficient fat supply (should be between 70 – 100 g/day), collection error (very common), watery stools, inflammatory stools with mucous and blood. As diarrhea itself can cause an increased fat excretion, in case of diarrhea a fat content of up to 14 g/24 hours is not specific for steatorrhea. Repeat tests (x3) are recommended. |
