Donath-Landsteiner antibodies
(Paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria)
Material: | Take 3 ml whole blood directly into pre-heated tube (monovette); let it coagulate at 37°C (in an incubator or in water) and after 30 min centrifuge it for 5 min. After that divide serum and blood clot straight away and send to us. For the indirect Coombs test an additional 3 ml EDTA-blood are required. |
Methods: | Agglutinationsteste → Agglutination | Reference range | Please refer to findings report |
Indication | Paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria |
Please note | The paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria is very rare today. In the past, it was often seen in combination with tertiary lues. Nowadays a related form of this hemolytic anemia is occasionally seen in children and youths after viral infections. Donath-Landsteiner antibodies are directed against the erythrocyte antigen P. The complement mediated hemolysis is set off by cold exposition and is accompanied by hemoglobinuria (in the initial phase only), fever with ague, headache, backache, leg- and abdominal pains. |
