Dibucaine number
(Cholinesterase variants)
Material: | 1 ml serum, hemolysis-free |
Methods: | Spektrometrie → UV- / VIS-Photometrie | Reference range | Most common phenotype UU (normal): > 70 % Heterozygous phenotype UA (intermediary): 30 – 70 % Homozygous phenotype AA (atypical): < 30 % |
Indication | In patients with low cholinesterase activity (CHE), there are atypical cholinesterases, which can lead to apnea when muscle relaxants of succinylcholine type are given. |
Comment | Please also refer to: “Cholinesterase” and “Cholinesterase, atypical, molecular genetic evaluation” |
Please note | Currently there is no test available, which can detect all enzyme variants. The evaluation of total cholinesterase (CHE) in the serum is not suitable as a screening for cholinesterase variants, as the enzyme variants show quantitative differences, which are dependent on the substrate used. |
